Weekly Tribes – Venn Diagram for Influence

It is likely that a little bit of “influence” is happening in your class. This strategy might help give both you and your students a review or plan for action. (This is also a good strategy for setting a successful environment for a substitute teacher.)

Have students brainstorm ideas that answer the question “What do students want or need to be successful at school (or in this classroom)?” Record on strips of paper.

Meanwhile, you, the teacher, should have several (6 – 10) pre-written strips of paper, each with the answer to this question: “What does a teacher want or need to be successful at school (or in this classroom)?”

When all strips of papers have been completed, draw a large Venn diagram and place the strips of paper on the “teacher wants/needs” side or the “student wants/needs” side, or in the “both” section.

WOW! It is likely that more than a few will land in “both”, and all can reflect on how this might be achieved (think ‘action plan’).

If there is little or nothing in the “both” section….well, that is also a tremendous opportunity for reflection and a plan for action!

This idea is from a trainer I met this summer…[if you are reading this – send me your name so I can give you due credit!]
