Feudalism

TITLE:  Feudalism – Reason to Roam

GRADE:  7

MATERIALS/TIME REQUIRED:  30-40 min. Prepared questions for discussion,

either written on paper or posted on the board.

PROVIDE FOR INCLUSION – A You Question, Energizer, or Linking Strategy: Pose a question, then have students model/walk through the strategy described below.

Example:  If you were given a million dollars, with the condition that you must give half of it away, who would you give it to, and why?

IDENTIFY THE OBJECTIVES:

Content Standard:  Historical analysis and interpretation; understand the development of feudalism….

Collaborative: Value diversity of ideas, work on tasks together, listen attentively

Personal: Express opinions; empathize

IDENTIFY THE STRATEGY:  Reason to Roam

The topic is “feudalism”.

Have students letter off in the group of three or four they are in, “A”, “B”, etc.  Students are given the question: “In your opinion, was the feudal system of the Middle Ages better (or worse) than the Roman Empire?  Why?”  Give the students, in each group, some time to organize, discuss and write down their thoughts.

Now have student “A” stand up, while student “C” raises his/her hand.  All student “A’s” walk to another group; when a new student “A” has arrived at the group, student “C” puts his/her hand down.  The new student “A” shares his/her group’s thinking while the group members listen attentively.  Next, the group shares their ideas, comments, etc.  Person “A” then takes that information back to the original group.  Repeat as often as desired.

REFLECTION:

Content:  What did you learn?  Were answers more often similar, or different?  How well do you now understand feudalism?  Could you explain it in five sentences or less?

Collaborative/social:  Describe how your group listened/interacted with one another.  If you were the ‘roamer’ – how did that feel?

Personal:  What did you like about this strategy?  How effective was it, in terms of learning about feudalism?  How did ‘empathy’ fit in to this strategy?

PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR APPRECIATION:  Invite statements.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT:  Depending on the answer to the content question above…have student now write an explanation of feudalism, in five sentences or less.

Ask if any remnants of ‘feudalism’ exist in today’s society?!
