GRADE:  K – 2

MATERIALS/TIME REQUIRED:  soup can, felt or “fun fur” googly eyes, pom-pom, glue; 60 minutes

PROVIDE FOR INCLUSION – A You Question, Energizer, or Linking Strategy: What is something you appreciate about your child?

IDENTIFY THE OBJECTIVES:

Content Standard: Parents learn about appreciation and community circle

Collaborative: Sharing Ideas

Personal: Use the Tribes TLC process with their children

IDENTIFY THE STRATEGY:  Present the Tribes agreements; focus on appreciation and community circle.  Then “make and take” as follows:

To get families using the supper time for talking time, we made a cube and we brainstormed community circle ideas to put in the cube to be conversation starters.  For example, “Who is your hero?  Why?”  Hopefully they wouldn’t need the starter questions for very long…

To model appreciation statements, parent were given an empty soup can, a piece of “fun fur” material that fits the can, 2 googly eyes and a pom-pom.  Glue the material, eyes and nose.  We brainstormed appreciation statements for families on small pieces of paper to go in the can.  The idea was that families would pull statements from the can and use them “on” family members.

REFLECTION: How might this change your family’s interaction?

PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR APPRECIATION:  Invite statements
