TITLE:  Be the Main Character

GRADE: 3

MATERIALS/TIME REQUIRED:  Children’s books: Franklin, Scaredy Squirrel, Pigeon, Fractured Fairy Tales; T-Shirt outline from book (p. 298)

PROVIDE FOR INCLUSION – A You Question, Energizer, or Linking Strategy: Who is your favourite book character?

IDENTIFY THE OBJECTIVES: Students communicate and share personal information to apply literary response and analysis; work together creatively, listen attentively.

IDENTIFY THE STRATEGY: “Outlines”

Teacher models how to feel out the t-shirt.   (Collar: write an alliterative adjective that goes with your first name, Middle: draw 3 things the main character enjoys doing, Shoulder: place your character would like to visit, Shoulder: Word that describes the character, Bottom: A wish your character would like to have)

Set Purpose: Explain that you are going to read the story and focus on the main character and then the kids create a t-shirt for the main character with their buddies.

REFLECTION: Did this activity help you to understand the main character in the story?

How was your t-shirt the same or different from the other pair?

Thank your pair for showing attentive listening

PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR APPRECIATION:  Model and invite statements

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT: Buddies work together. Older buddy helping younger buddy fill out one t-shirt per buddy.

When done, use “Milling to Music” to find another pair of buddies and share their t-shirt.
