Jigsaw – Influential Women in Canadian History

1. PROVIDE FOR INCLUSION:
A You Question, Energizer, or Linking Strategy

Energizer: Bubble Gum – Page 382.

The bubblegum energizer has students race to open a pack of bubblegum with mittens on. It ties into the topic of Influential Women in that all the women we would be learning about in the Jigsaw had to overcome obstacles and encountered many challenges when trying to reach their goals – similar to how the mittens would be an obstacle/challenge in the bubblegum energizer.

2. IDENTIFY THE OBJECTIVES: Content Objective:

Content Objective: To learn about several influential woman in Canadian history.

Collaborative Objective:

Participating fully

Listening Attentively

Respecting

3.  IDENTIFY THE STRATEGY(IES):

Jigsaw, page 267. Have the class meet in Tribes. Review the agreements. Follow Jigsaw directions  with the topic being Influential Women in Canadian History.

For the jigsaw activity, use 4 or 5 tables in different areas of the classroom, each with books, a laptop, and any other relevant materials/artifacts; each table/materials would be specific to an influential woman in Canadian history The students would share the materials and together discuss and share what they discover. Each student would be responsible for recording the information and presenting it to their tribe when the time was up.

After each tribe was finished sharing what they learned, this could evolve into a Discovery learning (Five E’s) experience.  Students could re-group for more research about influential Canadian women…those introduced in the Jigsaw and/or otherwise.

4. ASK REFLECTION QUESTIONS BASED ON THE OBJECTIVES:

Content: Do you feel like you got to know about each of the influential women equally? What strategies did you use to record your information and present it to your tribe?

Collaborative: Did you listen attentively to all group members? How might this experience have been different if one member of the group chose not to participate?

Personal: Do you feel like you did the best job you could so that your tribe got as much information as possible? Did you participate fully?

5. PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR APPRECIATION:

“I really liked when I saw people respecting the opinions of others…”

“I appreciate how you all listened carefully to the speaker…”

“I like how you all shared the materials…”
