Meaningful Appreciation

This TLE is from Caitlin, a teacher in Ontario, Canada

1. PROVIDE FOR INCLUSION:
A You Question, Energizer, or Linking Strategy

What characteristics do you like about yourself? What characteristics do you think people appreciate about you?

Watch this video about showing appreciation:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbnYi21TYJk

2. IDENTIFY THE OBJECTIVES:

Content Objective:  The objective will be to teach the students how to express appreciation for themselves and others, while building self-esteem and confidence.

Collaborative Objectives:

– expressing appreciation

– sharing
– respecting
– no put downs

3. IDENTIFY THE STRATEGY(IES):

Boasters (p. 216): we are going to have the students write positive statements about their classmates to show their appreciation and positive feelings towards one another. The students will have paper cut outs of their side profile, and put their name in the middle of the paper in order to help identify to whom they are showing appreciation towards. The students will then go from desk to desk to write a positive adjective, or statement about the student. The students will then go around a talking circle and pick one statement or adjective that is their favourite, and that they agree with about themselves.

4. ASK REFLECTION QUESTIONS BASED ON THE OBJECTIVES:
Content:
Why is it important to show appreciation and gratitude towards one another?

Collaborative:
How can showing appreciation to one another help us work better together and bring us closer?

Personal:
How did you feel when you read what others wrote about you?
Do you ever compliment yourself?

5. PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR APPRECIATION:
I felt good when…
I’m glad that people notice that I…
