Weekly Tribes 2014 – 2015 – It’s What’s Inside that Matters

This comes from Kimberly, a student in the current Tribes Basic Online Course. What a great way to remind, reflect, and renew community…a very influential suggestion as to how we attend more to the appearance, rather than ‘what’s inside.’

An activity I have done in the past to teach that you cannot know everything about someone by appearance alone consists of two packages. One package is beautiful and when opened has trash in it. The other package is crumpled newspaper that is torn and messy. It is full of prizes. I ask the students which package they want to open. Almost all students choose the beautiful one. They are always surprised by what is inside. It is a great starting point for discussing what we can and can’t know by looking at someone.
